HOLYOKE – The city will get $150,000 worth of sewer and water line improvements with construction of the high performance computing center downtown, officials said.
The infrastructure upgrades will be part of the construction on Bigelow Street of the $168 million academic research facility, center representatives said at a Planning Board hearing April 26.
A group of colleges, including the University of Massachusetts, Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and private companies are building the center.
HOLYOKE – Demolition began Monday on one of the two buildings that will be coming down at the Bigelow Street site of the future high performance computing center.
Contractor J.R. Vinagro, of Johnston, R.I., removed the north wall and loading dock of a metal building on the site between Cabot and Appleton streets, said Timothy J. Shannon, gas superintendent of the Holyoke Gas and Electric Department.
HOLYOKE – The plan for a $168 million high performance computing center for downtown is before the Conservation Commission and the Stormwater Authority, with only minor issues, an official said.
The Planning Board voted 5-0 on April 26 to approve the site plan for the center.
The academic research hub is being built at the former Mastex Industries site on Bigelow Street at the first-level canal.
HOLYOKE – The Planning Board Tuesday voted 5-0 to approve the site plan for the $168 million high performance computing center to be built overlooking the first-level canal on Bigelow Street.
“We’re really excited about being here this evening,” Angelucci said.
Angelucci was among the consultants representing the partners in the project: the University of Massachusetts, Harvard University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Boston University, Northeastern University, EMC Corp., of Hopkinton, an information storage, back-up and recovery firm, and Cisco Systems Inc., a California-based internet network equipment maker.
HOLYOKE – The Planning Board will begin reviewing the building plan for the $168 million high performance computing center at a public hearing on Tuesday.
“We’re excited to get to reach this stage of the project,” said Jeffrey Brancato, associate vice president for economic development with the University of Massachusetts, a partner in the project.
The hearing will be held at 6:30 p.m. at Holyoke Heritage State Park Visitors’ Center on Appleton Street.
HOLYOKE – Worldwide internet equipment maker Cisco Systems Inc. remains committed as a partner in the planned $168 million high performance computing center here despite recent problems, officials said.
Cisco has prompted concerns among business analysts since November. Its stock value fell and profit margins slumped as the company underwent a refocus and shut down the video camera line it bought two years earlier.
HOLYOKE – Demolition is scheduled to begin within weeks on the Bigelow Street site that will be home to the $168 million high performance computing center, an official said.
“You’re probably a month away from seeing the wrecking ball knock holes into the building,” James M. Lavelle, manager of the Holyoke Gas & Electric Department, said last week.

HOLYOKE – Construction is set to begin within four weeks on a 4.5 megawatt solar power project in Holyoke.
The $18 million to $20 million project will put 18,400 U.S.-built solar panels on two sites. Three megawatts of generating capacity will be near Holyoke Gas & Electric’s gas vaporization plant on Muller Road in West Holyoke, said James M. Lavelle, general manager of the municipal utility. Another 1.5 megawatts of generating capacity will be built on a vacant lot on Berkshire Street in the Springdale section of Holyoke.
