Data Centers’ Power Use Less Than Was Expected
SAN FRANCISCO — Data centers’ unquenchable thirst for electricity has been slaked by the global recession and by a combination of new power-saving technologies, according to an independent report on data center power use from 2005 to 2010.

Upgrades linked to tech project
HOLYOKE – The city will get $150,000 worth of sewer and water line improvements with construction of the high performance computing center downtown, officials said.
The infrastructure upgrades will be part of the construction on Bigelow Street of the $168 million academic research facility, center representatives said at a Planning Board hearing April 26.
A group of colleges, including the University of Massachusetts, Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and private companies are building the center.

Holyoke computing center site demolition gets going with contractor J.R. Vinagro chewing away
HOLYOKE – Demolition began Monday on one of the two buildings that will be coming down at the Bigelow Street site of the future high performance computing center.
Contractor J.R. Vinagro, of Johnston, R.I., removed the north wall and loading dock of a metal building on the site between Cabot and Appleton streets, said Timothy J. Shannon, gas superintendent of the Holyoke Gas and Electric Department.

Holyoke plan for $168 million high performance computing center proceeds through regulatory channels
HOLYOKE – The plan for a $168 million high performance computing center for downtown is before the Conservation Commission and the Stormwater Authority, with only minor issues, an official said.
The Planning Board voted 5-0 on April 26 to approve the site plan for the center.
The academic research hub is being built at the former Mastex Industries site on Bigelow Street at the first-level canal.

Holyoke Planning Board approves site plan for $168 million computing center
HOLYOKE – The Planning Board Tuesday voted 5-0 to approve the site plan for the $168 million high performance computing center to be built overlooking the first-level canal on Bigelow Street.
“We’re really excited about being here this evening,” Angelucci said.
Angelucci was among the consultants representing the partners in the project: the University of Massachusetts, Harvard University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Boston University, Northeastern University, EMC Corp., of Hopkinton, an information storage, back-up and recovery firm, and Cisco Systems Inc., a California-based internet network equipment maker.
