Patick, NU to build center

Eager to establish its presence on the forefront of technological innovation, Northeastern University has teamed up with the Patrick-Murray Administration, the Pioneer Valley Planning Commission, The City of Holyoke, private partners EMC and Cisco and a group of colleges known as the University Consortium to launch a new high-speed computing center in Holyoke.

The Consortium consists of MIT, the University of Massachusetts, Harvard, Boston University and Northeastern.

Trustee Bahaa Hariri Pledges $15M for New Computing Institute

Computation has become academia’s lifeblood, coursing through virtually every field of study. Recognizing its importance, Boston University trustee Bahaa Hariri (SMG’90) has pledged $15 million for an institute that will support teams of University and outside experts pursuing what the institute’s director calls important, transformative interdisciplinary research.

To meet demand, utility boosting electricity transmission in Connecticut, Massachusetts

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — Two subsidiaries of Northeast Utilities will soon break ground on a nearly $800 million transmission upgrade in Connecticut and Massachusetts to improve reliability during peak use and keep pace with rising electricity demand.

Peak demand for electricity has doubled since 1980, Northeast Utilities says. Demand is expected to increase in Connecticut an average of nearly 1 percent a year from 2008 to 2018. In western Massachusetts, the average annual increase is projected to be 1.3 percent.
