Computer hub runs in fast lane

HOLYOKE – The scientists and engineers behind the planned high-performance computing center don’t yet know what types of computers will go into that center even though a groundbreaking is set for this fall.

Computer technology moves much too fast for anyone to know now what will be available in two years when the building is completed, said W. Richards Adrion, a professor of computer science at the University of Massachusetts Amherst.

But what Adrion and his clients do know is that the new center will have physical space where middle- and high-school students from around the region can come and learn about the world of supercomputers that can in some cases perform quadrillions of calculations a second…
