Colleges still computing tax payment Computer center taxes uncertain

HOLYOKE – The group of colleges that is planning to build a more than $100 million high performance computing center in the canal area has yet to decide whether it will make payments in lieu of property taxes to the city, officials said.

The computing center probably will be tax-exempt in terms of how it is organized under state law in which a nonprofit entity will be established to run the facility. But nothing has been finalized, said Tom Testa, assistant vice president with Boston University.

“We’re just still trying to figure out the details … that’s where we stand on any kind of in-lieu-of-taxes payment stuff,” Testa said in a voice-mail message on Tuesday…
