Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick announced that the state will pledge up to $25 million in support of the new high performance computing center development project in Holyoke. He also named the Holyoke Innovation District, as it’s called, as the 20th Growth District in the state. The addition of state funding as announced on Monday brings the grand total to $65 million from the various participants.

HOLYOKE, Mass. (WGGB)– Gov. Deval Patrick brought good economic news to Holyoke on Monday.
He told a chamber of commerce luncheon at the Log Cabin that the field of potential sites for a new high performance computing center has been narrowed to two. One is at the old Mastex location, and the other is at Open Square. Both are located along the canal system which is vital in generating hydroelectric power for the center.

With the state’s help, ground will be broken soon on a high tech computing center in Holyoke. Monday at the Log Cabin, the Governor narrow the list of potential sites down to two. He says the center will either be here at Open Square off Lyman Street, or down the road at the former Masstex facility on Bigelow Street.

As president of the Greater Holyoke Chamber of Commerce, she said the stark realities of poverty, unemployment, and urban blight should not be the focus at this point in the city’s history, a time when most would agree that the potential exists for progress on an historic level.

The commonwealth’s planned data and computing center in Western Massachusetts has been handed $25 million by Gov. Deval Patrick, who also tagged the area around the center’s future home of Holyoke as the Holyoke Innovation District. All told, the new High Performance Computing Center will get $65 million in funding, including $40 million from a group of universities.

Following is a joint statement by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the University of Massachusetts, Boston University and Northeastern University on planning for a green, high-performance computing center (GHPCC) in Holyoke, Mass.
Back in November of last year, the consortium pledged a commitment to work diligently for the next 120 days with the Governor and other cabinet officials, Congressman Olver, Holyoke officials and our colleagues in industry, notably EMC Corp. and Cisco Systems, to move to the next stage of planning the HPCC. Today, we report on the considerable progress made concerning academic, organizational and capital elements of the project.
